Meeting new requirements for Federal Government bids in 2025

Automate compliance with the Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy

Supplying to or bidding for work with the Australian Federal Government? If you’re a supplier looking to provide construction services worth over $7.5m, or ICT products, furniture & fitouts, or any kind of apparel worth over $1m, you will now need to submit a Supplier Environmental Sustainability Plan (SESP) with your bid starting from FY25.

Learn how other Australian companies have automated the management of the greenhouse gas emissions data required for these plans, and saved tens of thousands of dollars of consulting fees as a result.

The webinar covers:

  • The end-to-end process from data collection to bid-readiness
  • What Scope 1, 2, 3, and embodied emissions are and how to report them correctly
  • How Avarni's specialised carbon accounting software automatically calculates emissions, reducing your ongoing reporting costs
  • Actionable next steps you can take today with Avarni & our partners

How the ESP Policy impacts you

The Australian Government’s Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy (ESP Policy) has introduced the Supplier Environmental Sustainability Plan (SESP) requirement, mandating that companies detail how they manage and reduce their carbon footprint.

Initially applicable to construction services from 1 July 2024 — and expanding to sectors like ICT, furniture, and textiles from 1 July 2025 — the SESP must comprehensively address emissions and outline effective reduction strategies.

Key elements include:
  • Current emissions data: Document current carbon emissions, including Scope 1, 2, and relevant Scope 3 sources.
  • Reduction initiatives: Outline specific measures such as energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy adoption, and other sustainable practices.
  • Reduction targets: Set clear, time-bound goals for reducing emissions.
  • Monitoring & reporting: Establish systems for regular tracking and transparent reporting of emissions and progress.

FAQs

  • What is carbon accounting?
    open/close
Carbon accounting is the process of systematically measuring and recording the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with specific spend and activity data activities of an organization over a defined period. It uses established emission factors, which convert spend and activity data (like liters of fuel used or kilowatt-hours of electricity consumed) into carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e).
  • How does Avarni work?
    open/close
Simply upload your procurement spend and activity data into Avarni, and Avarni’s powerful AI technology automatically converts the data into emissions data, allowing you to visualise your organization’s carbon footprint, broken down by Scopes 1-3, GHG categories, suppliers, and more.
  • What Scope 3 categories does Avarni cover?
    open/close
Avarni covers the Scope 3 categories 1-14, with specialised features to aid in the automatic calculation of Purchased Goods & Services, Capital Goods, Business Travel, Employee Commuting and Upstream & Downstream Transportation & Distribution.

For those of us that have grown up loving a spreadsheet, I'm very pleased that finally there are solutions in this space that are coming to ground, like Avarni’s solution, that is giving us the possibility of managing very large data sets and minimizing that level of consultant intervention.

I did a new exercise using Avarni to do the initial emission factor database matching. That saved hours of work, which is sometimes a very manual process, matching it line by line in the spreadsheet.
